My family has a tendency to give me things all the time and now it feels like my house if full of clutter! Now that we have a baby girl on the way, I'm afraid it's just going to get worse. My mom doesn't mind when I get rid of stuff that she gives us but DH's mom gets upset. Really I just wish they'd keep it themselves and save me the trip to the thrift store. Is there a way to politely stop this?

i would tell her that while you appreciate it your house is gonna be smaller when DD arrives with her clothes and toys and baby equipment...maybe you could ask DH to have a word with her and just tell her suptlely that you dont have room for anymore things since the new babys coming and then theres christmas presents e.t.c...

Yeah, this is pretty much one of those impossible things. If your MIL is anything like mine, she would be offended if we politely asked her not to do that and would probably keep doing it. She is the queen of clutter and gives us so much stuff. Some of it is really cute or nice, but even so it gets to be TOO much. Also, if she gives us something, she will NOT let us get rid of it or give it to anyone else. She gets really mad. Then she'll tell us to give it back to her if we don't want it, but she'd be really upset with us if we really did that every time.

If you figure out how to deal with this problem... PLEASE let me know... My grandmother is FAMOUS for saying "no really you can have it" and then when you are done with it and have gotten rid of it wants it back....

OMGsh!! I totally agree with you!! We dont have a very large home and we have 3 kids! 2 of the kids share a room and we are just so cluttered!!! Every time DH mom comes over she brings bags full of stuff........its really sweet and all but she is a real bargain shopper and its always things we may need later but she saw it on sale and had to buy it for us now.....so it requires storing for a while and we have NO storage room!! My DH is oblivious to this and thinks we need things when they are on sale and we just need to keep it all

I currently have several of her crafty snowmen and country cats "prominently" displayed around the house! She has the most cluttered house I have ever seen, so I just don't think she gets it... |

I'm so glad I do not have this problem!! At my house if it does not have a "home" or "spot", it's outta here.
I would tell them that while you appreciate all that she has given you, with the baby on the way space is limited and at this point if she has anything she needs to get rid of to please ask you first, because if it is not something you need, I'm sure there are others who could use it. One thing I did with my last child is tell people not to give us stuffed animals, I had so many and finally donated them all. ![]() Kaitlin 5/28/98 7lbs 2 oz * Preston 9/20/01 9lbs 12.5oz * Parker 7/29 9lbs 15oz |
