Vanishing Twin Syndrome and Other Worries |
Lead | ||

I don't know if this board gets a lot of traffic from you twin +more mommies, but I needed to come here and talk about some things that have started to
scare me since I found out we are expecting multiples. Our RE was quite confident that our babies will do well and said that our chances of losing either one
of them is very slim. But every baby book I have read has said, do not announce your twin pregnancy until 12 weeks because vanishing twin syndrome occurs in
30-50% of multiple gestations. How can this be right? I can think of all the twin (or more) pregnancies I have seen on this board in the two+ years I have been
here, but have never heard of anyone experiencing it? I can't stop worrying that something will go wrong. I am so worried. I felt great last week when we
saw the babies and heard their heartbeats, but I don't (and haven't) feel pregnant at all. I haven't had anything bad bleeding or cramping,
it's just that I don't feel much going on. Is that normal? When did you all start to feel pregnant?

Ok, first of all don't spend your pregnancy worrying. Enjoy it. That is the best advice any Dr ever gave me.
My RE and OB both told me (I had the same concerns about losing one of the twins) that they usually have warning signs if one twin looks like it isn't going to make it in the 1st trimester. They both told me that when they measure around the same and have good strong heartbeats (not in comparison to each other) that the % of one vanishing is very low. In fact, my OB said that as long as they are not mono-amniotic and fit the criteria above, each baby has the same m/c rate ect as singletons do (which I'm sure you know drops significantly after a HB is detected). So, I'd say since your RE saw the u/s and didn't give you any indication that he was concerned about either baby, you're going to be fine. I think pregnancy symptoms differ person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy. I personally felt like death when I was pregnant with the twins and it started around 6 weeks and lasted until week 14. With my first, I had ONE week of feeling queasy, around 11 weeks, and that was it aside being sleepy! Easier said than done, but count yourself lucky that you don't feel like crap! I know there are twin moms on here who had zero m/s with their twins. And you defintily don't want any bleeding! My college roomate is due with twins in a few weeks and she said she felt perfectly normal through the entire 1st trimester. Congrats!! I'm really happy for you |

Oh, I know how you feel. I read waaay too much info online about how it was almost certain I'd lose one baby. I had to stop, it was driving me nutty!! The
best book I had focused just on nutrition ect, it didn't go into all the scary stuff that won't happen anyway. If you ever need anything, feel free to
PM me!

My next appointment is July 10th - two weeks from today. Seems like forever! I hope time flies by. Then I have another one a week after that on the 17th - my graduation appointment from my RE. Thanks Holly - I probably will pm you at some point or another. You are so helpful! |

Amber... I have a friend who lives 2 doors down from me and she has 2 1/2 year old twins. She didn't have a SINGLE second of m/s with her twins. In fact,
when she went in for her first OB appt. her doctor said "oh!" when she started the u/s and my friend immedately replied, "I knew it! I'm not
really pregnant am I? I just feel too good." The OB assured her she was DEFINATELY pregnant and then broke the news of the twins to her

Thanks Celinda! That's me! If I didn't have pictures to prove it, I would think I dreamt the being pregnant and having twins thing. It is so hard to
get excited right now. It's making me crazy! I want to be excited, but I am feeling like a sourpuss instead.

Amber, enjoy your healthy pregnancy! I've never had twins (!), but I have never had a moment of morning sickness or anything, and I too worried myself
about it, count yourself lucky, and enjoy!!! You'll know about it once they are here I'm sure!
And have I told you how absolutely delighted I am for you and your family?! |

I always had fears but I did with my son and was high risk then as well. My Perinatalogist reassured me that the older the babies were in the first trimester,
the less likley that could happen. WHen I went at about 9&1/2 weeks he told me that it was very unlikely at that point but to not focus on the negative
things that could happen, just to take it one day at a time. Honestly, I just prayed every single day and stayed hopeful and now I am blessed with four 1+3)
beautful children, something I thought would never happen.

I've never posted here, but have had a bit of experience with this so I hope you don't mind me posting! I have a set of twins, now four years old. I
remember worrying a lot about vanishing twin... they were healthy and fine and wonderful. Then, I got pregnant again, when the twins were three. When I went
and had my first ultrasound, the doctor told me that I had one healthy baby, but that I had had a vanishing twin with that pregnancy... you could still the sac
where the baby had been... a little circle... there just wasn't a baby in it like there was in the other. I don't say that to scare anyone... the
opposite, actually. My doctor made it seem like most vanishing twins vanish before a mother even knows that they are expecting twins... that once both babies
grow and start to develop and have identifiable heart rates, it is much less likely for you to lose one.
I hope that your pregnancy is going well, and that your ultrasound goes well this week! This is a nice board... I"ll have to come back! |

Amber - you are right, in the years I've been here, I have heard VTS happen maybe two or three times, and that is since 2003. The one person I can easily
recall that had VTS happen to her posted on another board I read when I first started here. The 10th is coming up soon!
