Remove this ad Hi ladies! I wanted to ask you something for those of you that send your kids to pre-k? What are they learning? I get little progress reports on what they are teaching the kids, and honestly I'm a little disappointed. I mean, they are doing colors and shapes. Gabrielle knew those really early. Maybe because I'm a SAHM and we just watched a lot of Sesame Street and Mickey Mouse Club? She knows her ABC's too and can spell some words even, and they haven't even started doing letters at pre-k yet. Now, don't get me wrong, she is emotionally immature and does need this time in school... BUT I am worried about her getting bored or her brain getting numb Anyway, I guess it just proves I have to continue to do more at home with her... but anyway I was just curious what your kids were learning in pre-k? .........................................

Oldtimer Posts: 5361 09/30/2008 8:01 AM	Gab unfortunately is in a pre-preschool class and was told in the orientation that they won't learn letters and such but I'm not sure what they do with the 3yo preschool. Her class age ranges from 2.5-3yrs and she is the oldest in the class and many won't be 3 until Dec. First class she made a picture with shapes and they came out and told me how impressed they were she knew all her shapes and colors, old news to me as she known them for a long time. I worry that she'll be bored as well but my Gabrielle is emotionally immature too and I'm soaking this up for the socialization for her because she knows a lot but she needs this time to learn how to function in a group and without me. We do letters, numbers etc here too and she learns a lot. I don't think they start the real learning stuff until 4 maybe?

Oldtimer Posts: 2234 09/30/2008 9:15 AM	Shayden is in 3yo preschool (at the local elementary) and is also exercising a lot of stuff she already knows. I am fine with that, for the most part I am sending her for social skills, because I am a SHAM. I have been doing some home schooling with her, but homeschooling doesn't build social skills, even with as many outing as we have (3-4 or more a week). We were told they would be leaning their numbers to 20, letters and writing them, shapes, colors, songs, have story time and more. She can identify her numbers to 20 and all of the alphabet-capital and lowercase, she can spell and write her first name, she knows all the basic shapes including octagon and hexagon and she knows all her colors and know what colors you make by mixing colors. One day they used colored glue to put the kids names on construction paper and the kids put Cheerios on the glue. So there is a creative way to write her name. Another day they traced the numbers 1 and 2, then cut out 1 circle and glued it by the 1 and cut out 2 squares and glued them by the 2. Harmony Pround Aunt and Nanny to Triple D!

Oldtimer Posts: 4558 09/30/2008 12:22 PM Member	Jack's daycare class is the 2-3 year old class, but he will move up to Pre-K in November. He knows all of his colors. He's known his shapes for at least a year now. My sisters were super impressed that my 2 year old knew what an oval & a semi-circle were. He can count to 20 (most of the time, but the teens are new, so he's still working on them), knows his ABCs to sing. Can identify the letters in his name. I'm glancing at the weekly newsletter we get from his classroom & they're reviewing colors & the letters RBY&G (they've been working with primary colors the last few weeks). Again, Jack has known his colors for what seems like forever, but I guess maybe because most of the kids in his class are smaller, that's why they're covering it. Sigh if we could just get potty training under control.

Oldtimer Posts: 50024 09/30/2008 12:37 PM	As far as pottying... my developmental teacher/instructor lady last year said that a child who can draw a circle should be able to potty train. She has 8 kids and been doing daycare for over 20 years... so I don't know if that info is based on something she learned or experience... anyway, if Jack can't draw a circle, then you can stop beating yourself up Thanks for the input, ladies. I guess I will just work on her writing skills, since they could use some improvement (letters care 4 inches big ) .........................................

And I know its a little more difficult to train boys. Like I've said--he does great with peeing on the potty. Sometimes he'll do well pooping too, but its very touch and go. He'd rather have a pull up. Cookie bribery worked for a while, but not anymore. I guess I'm going to have to research this.

Oldtimer Posts: 651 09/30/2008 10:43 PM	Owen isn't in preschool but I am going to offer some insight anyhow The preschool curriculum is shaped around socialization, not academics. The whole "purpose" of preschool is to get kiddo's comfortable with a classroom setting, schedules, interacting and conflict resolution with peers, ect. Although you may not think this is helpful your kindergarten teachers will thank you. I have a BA in early childhood education (prek-3). One of my first field experiences was the first week of kindergarten. My assignment was to observe for 2 days then fill out a checklist of who attended pre-k. I got 100%. The difference is amazing, you are giving them a huge advantage sending them to pre-k.

The whole reason I am sending her is to get her used to the school environment because she refuses to listen to me I take that back, she is an extreme child, she's either super good or downright evil Gigi - Did you read my post about germs, etc that is how I got G to stop resisting pooping in the potty? Oh, btw, Alek just turned two in Aug and before he was even two he would pee and poop on the potty if I put him on it and told him to. then suddenly he decided that he will pee but not poo... he will "try" to poo for .5 seconds and say "I can't do it" and jump down... and now he will stop playing and go hide somewhere and then come out and say "I pooped!" like it is a game. So um yeah they are little stinkers! .........................................

Remove this ad i agree about preschool teaching social skills more than academics ...drew LOVES school..he's doing so well potty training is going very well..and he's picked up so much from preschool.. although, like G ..he has known his letters, sounds, shapes, etc for a long time...so i'm not even sure if they do that kind of stuff...its mostly playing, sharing, painting, coloring, etc..that kind of stuff...but his teachers are very good at what they do Angels lost: m/c 8-22-03 m/c 10-3-03 m/c 3-25-04 trisomy 17 d&c-baby girl *Drew was born: (c-section)* 2-12-05 Brady was born: (VBAC) 2-20-08 Abby was born: (VBAC) 3-22-10 We nursed for 28 months and 9 days...what a WONDERFUL time! Oldtimer Posts: 3182 10/10/2008 2:53 PM	They STILL cover letters, numbers and colors in kindergarten. FYI... If your child is anywhere above or below the average spectrum, it can be hard. Especially in the early years of school where teachers have more on their plates (separation anxiety, ability to sit still) than just traditional education. Preschool is fun and playing. If they learn a few letters, colors, or even words in the process, all the better! But my goal for Evan was that he learn how to listen to another adult, play with other kids in a CONTROLLED manner and how to hold scissors properly (he just wouldn't learn from me!) Oldtimer Posts: 50024 10/10/2008 4:42 PM	Tracey - those are my goals for pre-school too (especially the scissors part ) but I am just worried that by kindergarten she will be bored covering letters for the 4th year in a row, and time will have been wasted teaching other things I don't know what other things though It's all good, I am gonna try just working on her writing skills... it won't be too far out there but will help in school for sure! .........................................

From my experience it helps that they can identify their names and do some basic things like colours and shapes, but honestly the amount they soak up in kindergarten is sooooo HUGE that really, IMO, what they know or don't know going in doesn't matter overly much. My son knew how to count to 10 and barely scribble his name (believe me I tried to get more into that brain!)and he came out of kindergarten reading, writing and much much more. I really does sort itself out. I'm an ECE as well and it is all about the socialization/following direction for Pre-k. It may seem strange but too much academic prep before kindergarten may lead to a boring first year of school ;-)

It's kind of interesting, you pay for the pre-school but k-4th grades are free. If you go to daycare/pre-school there, you are automatically given a slot in the school. So I'm debating on forking over the 5k for next year so she can go there. They don't give refunds though, so if they decide after a few months that your kid is not adjusting, they can give you the boot but no money back . .........................................

Alphabet, numbers, colors.. BUT they are also teaching her about the days of the week, the seasons, how to cut in a straight line.. or to follow the cutting line.. to organize things from smallest to largest.. about 'family', they do fun things with the letters.. etc.. Remove this ad Maddie is in a morning preschool class at the center she has attended since she was 2. It is a center that practices traditional preschool, Montessori and Reggio Emilia. They are an art and music based school. She has learned a lot! She can count to 40 or so, knows her shapes and colors and can identify most (but not all) letters. She is working hard on writing her name but, still messes up the order of the letters. They are in the middle of a "pumpkin unit" right now. They went to a pumpkin patched, read pumpkin themed books, did pumpkin themed art projects and made pumpkin pancakes! She also gets 2 Spanish lessons per week. She is a "peer model" in a special education preschool class in the afternoon that the school district helps with at her normal center.
