Car Seats- forward or rear facing? |
Lead | ||
|
Casey is 13 months old and is about 24 pounds. I moved her seat from rear facing to forward facing about a week ago. I just received an email from
askdrsears.com who said that the AAP has now said that it is safest to keep an infant rear facing until the age of 2. So, is your child rear or forward facing
right now? I am wondering if I should turn it back around.

I know it's safest to keep the baby rear facing as long as possible. And I just found out that our convertible car seat can be rear facing for a lot longer
than I thought. With Izzie we turned her around at about 14 months I think? With Nate, since he seems perfectly content facing backwards I think I will keep
him that way as long as possible.

riley is forward facing too...she is a big girl so rear facing just won't do for her. And she hates car seats to begin with so I think I would be pulling
my hair out if i had to keep her rear facing. She is much more content now that she can watch the movies with the other 2.

Forward facing here I have big girls 26lbs+ and 31"+ so they definitely don't fit that way.

I remember facing this with Alek a couple years back but turned him around at age 1 because he was turning his neck to see the tv
Otherwise I would have
left him rear facing.

Forward facing. We switched her from an infant seat to a regular car seat a month ago, and she has been forward facing since, although she was a bit under the
weight requirement.
So why did I do it? Because I drive a very small car, and the seat facing backwards was positionned in an odd way and was moving all around, which was a lot less safe in my opinion than making Elodie face forward. So I made the call.

Makenna is still rear facing. She is small at 18 1/2 pounds and 27 inches. She don't mind being rear facing because she can see the oldest two in the back
and they talk to her.

Audrey is almost 14 months and is still rear facing. We didn't move Lydia (her big sis) to forward facing until she was 18 months old, but she was barely
20 pounds at that point. Moved my son Charlie to forward facing right at 12 months. I think it has something to do with their necks not being strong enough at
12 months to withstand a car crash as well facing foward (assuming the crash was a front-end crash?). Anyways... we will probably keep Audrey rear-facing for a
few months longer. She is small and it doesn't seem to bother her.

I am sweating over this... I've just read some papers saying they should be rear facing 'til 4yo... well Harry would have a fit if we turned him
back... F is still in her capsule, I think we will get a rear facing seat for a bit longer... the boys were both forward facing from about 7 months (both the
correct wt, fat boys!!!). The head is disproportionately large and they can tear their spinal cord, and are 1.76x more likely to die if forward facing... the
crash test footage is very convincing... There are mote factors to consider thoughthan these stats, and these decisions remain quite a personal affair, I
don't know what we will do to be honest, just glad I can still squeeze her in her capsule for now!!!

I took a child car seat safety class not too long ago. They said that they prefer that kids be kept rear facing until age 4! I just can't imagine that.

Wow - 4 years old!! If that is true, manufacturers need to start making the seats and benches in the car actually flip around (instead of the car seat) so that
the kids have room for their feet to go.
Also, we just moved Audrey to forward facing at 16.5 months. She's right around 20 pounds now and I thought she'd like to face forward. She still fits facing backwards, though, so I hope I shouldn't need to turn her back around. Hmmm... Erin |
