Who do you think ultimately decides on whether or not your child will have a nickname? The parents, teachers, the child him/herself, friends of the child? If we have a boy we will use Gabriel. I do not want the nn Gabe used, at least not now. My other ds is Samuel but we call him Sammy - everyone knows him as Sammy because of us. This year his teacher began calling him Sam so now some people call him that.It did not bother me so I let it go. |

Well, we have Gabrielle. She is named after my father, Gabriel, nn Gabe. Anyway, we did NOT want her called Gabby/Gabi because I felt it was like giving her a
nn that was kinda mean, like giving a baby boy Richard the name Dick
Anyway, we just always always called her Gabrielle, and no one ever really called her Gabby or Gabi. I got more the wrong pronunciation of Gabrielle, where they say it the boy way Gabriel, long "A" sound. Because I got pretty darned sick of correcting people saying Gabriel (long A) which mattered to me because of my dad being a Gabriel  , I eventually just started calling her Gabi/Gabby because people had no problem with the short "A" sound in the
word Gabby/Gabi.
By the time she was 2.5, she was talking like crazy and never shut up so the nn Gabby worked for her
BTW, I think there's something to the fact that Gabriel is the messenger angel and therefore it's something about that name and a child - they will never shut up  because my dad never shuts up either. 
I like the nn Gabe, but I think it is not so cute on a tiny baby, more like a two or three year old, so just introduce him as Gabriel and always refer to him that way, and there's a real good chance people will too. Hopefully you won't get people using the short "A" sound (aka Gabrielle) forcing you to prematurely use Gabe to avoid having to correct people like I was. Weird thing here too, I guess with the huge spanish population, everyone wants to call Gabi "Gabriella" and so she has to correct them with that too

Actually for us, our kids gave each other their nicknames
We just use it around the house but ultimately I think the parents decide what the nickname will
be.

I think it's up to the parents.
Our girls only have nn around the house. (Well, Chessa doesn't like her "baby" nickname anymore so we had to quit calling her that) lol Some people call Chessa, Chess. She hated it at first but now it's ok. Most call her Chessa, some of her friends call her Chester (her great-grandpa's name so she's proud).
We call Carli "scootchie" around the house but we'll never call her "Carl". We usually call her "Carli Chaos" b/c her middle name is "Kay" and well, it just fits. lol If I were you, just call him Gabriel and that's what everyone else will call him. Let it be known early.

I also believe it's up to the parents. If you give your child a nickname, obviously people will copy it. If they try to do it & that's not their
name, correcting them should stop it.

i kinda wish i wouldn't of named drew "andrew" cause i never call him that...and it's so weird to use that at the doctors

I think it's the parents and then later the child's friends in middle and high school. We started calling Jordanne Jordi and Jord at about 6 months and
that's what most other people call her too. I really didn't think Autumn could be shortened but she wasn't even a couple weeks old when my parents
started calling her Auti and that's what everyone has called her ever since (so I guess grandparents have some control in the name thing too-lol) and not
much can be done with Noah, but dh and I usually call him No-ee. Dh's brother's name is Christopher and it was never shortened to Chris until he was
probably 14, and that by his friends.

I'm with Tracy, I think some of it comes from home, but often times from friends. MY BIL's pals always called him Matt, but no one in the family ever
did, at home he was always Matthew. I think eventually it will really be up to him, just hope he doesn't take a liking to G Dawg
On another note, I have discovered that no matter how simple you think a name is, someone will mess it up. When we named Seth I never thought I would have any issues with his name, but TONS of people think I am saying "Jeff". And our receptionist at the ped calls him "Zest". I thought Seth was a pretty straightforward name, but who can figure? I have a girlfriend who's little one is named Cale, and she has the same problem, says people always call him Cole. I think it is up to the child! my mother is constantly trying to call Alexis Lexi. Alexis hates it and makes sure to correct her. "No Grandma Di. It is
ALEXIS." Only 5 and she has an opinion about it.
