He is such a big boy - potty trained and in a big boy bed before 2 1/2 - both really easy because he was ready. I that he would all of a sudden be ready and it is just not happening. He is going to be 3 next week - I have not tried very hard but have tried a little and we talk about it all the time. My dh says I am at fault and we need to just take it :-(

From everyone that I've talked to, though, the longer they have it, the less likely they'll give it up on their own. There's tons of cute ideas to take them away though. Big boy party--make a big deal, cake and all, and have a ceremony where you throw them away or put them in a bag for "other babies" Pacifier fairy--put them under his pillow/on his nightstand and the paci fairy will come and take them and leave him a big boy toy. Put it in a Build a Bear--I have a friend who manages at a Build-A-Bear and they have lots of parents who come in and have them put the paci in the bear when they stuff them. Oldtimer Posts: 1917 08/17/2009 4:28 PM	My little one doesn't turn 3 until November, but we got rid of it several months ago. DS gave all his to our friends baby and he got to go pick out a big boy movie. I held on to the paci longer than needed because I didn't want to go through the bad nights. He really did not have any bad nights. He woke up a once the first few nights but was fine. It was way easier than I imagined it would be and it is so much nicer not having to deal with finding one before bed! Good luck on deciding what to do!

But there are times when we don't have it, like for a nap in the car and he goes crazy. Ironically he DOES NOT sleep with it at daycare and has not since before he turned 2 - so I guess I know he can do it.

Oldtimer Posts: 1135 08/18/2009 3:47 PM	DD finally gave hers up about 4 months before turning 3. The only reason I finally threw them out was because she chewed on them and they broke open. I was so scared she would inhale a piece of it in her sleep. It wasn't exactly what I had planned to get rid of them, but it worked out in the end. The first 2 nights were terrible; I felt like we were running a rehab center. She screamed "I neeeeeeeed it" all night. But that was it, 2 nights and over with. I wished I had done it sooner. Oldtimer Posts: 2959 08/19/2009 12:13 PM	We got rid of Nicole's cold turkey last year when she got a really nasty mouth infection. And I thought it was something she picked up off the paci. So I threw it out and did not even think twice abou it. She did not either and I think it had a little to do with her mouth huritng from the infection. Jaxon on the other hand he is 17 months and it is going to be harder. We cut the tip of the nipple off and he still sucks the darn thing. And if we forget it somewhere or he can't find it around the house,....he just walks around crying nite nite over and over and over. I wish I could just do it but I don't want the sleepless nights. Good luck..I so understand

Oldtimer Posts: 50025 08/19/2009 8:30 PM	Alek gave his up early on (I took his and Gabi's away at the same time from anytime use to "for sleep time only") so he was about 5 months or so I guess ??? when he gave up his, he never was addicted to it. I let Gabi go till almost 3 with hers at night only. I spoke to her for weeks about it was going to be time to give it up and told her she was going to give it up for a big girl toy. Talked it up, a lot. When it was the day to give up the paci, she got the toy... she was ok mostly but sometimes she would ask for it, and I would tell her "ok, I will give you the binky back but then I have to take away your big girl toy." (Tawny, Barbie's horse) She would say no, that's ok, and once she told me she was sad without it, and I told her "I know" empathetically... and that was it. This is from a girl who finds the slightest changes in her life as earth-shattering... so it CAN be done relatively painlessly, you just have to figure out how you want to do it. Some people have just cut the tip off the paci and when the kid finds it, they say "oh no it's broken, time to throw it away" and that's it. Wouldn't work with us as we had about 50 of them .........................................

I was SO glad my kids never found their thumbs...though it would have been nice for awhile, since Lucas kept losing his binkies in the middle of the night. My sister is 12 and was a HUGE thumbsucker. My mom tried everything and the only thing that worked was her heading to school. No one wants to be called a baby in school, so she stopped. Remove this ad Truett had to give his up not long after potty training b/c he dropped it in the potty. There was no pee or poop in there, but still! I washed it, boiled it, and kept it just in case, but he never made a big deal out of it. If he did ask about it, I would just say "Remember you dropped your paci in the potty... so we don't have it anymore." He was fine. Since then (especially for about the first month or two), it has taken him longer to fall asleep. I guess that's the price I pay! But a little after 2 she bit a big hole in and and I didn't want to buy another one, so I said it was broken and we have to throw it in the trash. She was ok with that because she likes to throw things in the trash. She asked for it a couple of times but never had a meltdown, I just said, "It broke, remember? We had to throw it away?" I think it helped that I was very sympathetic, I acted like I was really sad that it broke, and I was sorry. Plus it made me feel like less of the bad guy!! My cousin took all her kids (who were 2.5 or older) to the park to have a "Farewell Binky!" ceremony. Where they tied the binky to a helium balloon and released it. Remove this ad Autumn never used one, even though we tried to give her one many times, but Jordanne had one until she was 2 1/2 and was sooo attached to it. We went on a trip for over a week when she was 2 1/2 and told her we forgot it (which of course we didn't). She actually did really well and was o.k. without it by the time we got home.
