fundal height question???...and vent about doctor too.... |

my sister has had two small babies they were classed as IUGR as they were under 2.5kg...so with this pregnancy she is 30weeks tomorrow...she is having extra U/S's to check on her little boys growth...now my question is is Fundal Height a good indication of growth?...she is measuring 2weeks behind at last measurement...so far his 2 growth scan at 20weeks and 27.2weeks he has been growing beautifully right in the middle of the percentiles on the chart...shes a little worried about her fundal height measurement because she was 1week behind at 22weeks measuring 21weeks and at 28weeks she was measuring 26weeks fundal height wise...at her last appointment she had the woman doctor from hell...she disagreed with everything we said ( her EDD in May 6th which is a thursday) she got out that pregnancy wheel and said her due date is a friday (erm no it isnt) based on her first scan that gave her the EDD of May 6th she was 7weeks 6days on a wednesday that would make her 8weeks on a thursday thus she is 1more week ahead every thursday... (i swear this woman if you pulled out a white piece of paper she would tell you it wasnt white) she also told her to ignore anything her regular midwife says...(baring in mind this is the first meeting with this woman) and the other midwives have been looking after her since day one...now i know not every woman gets as many U/S's as my sister and i thought based on that is wether they would send you for a scan to indicate growth because of measuring too far behind or too far infront could indicate a small or big baby...she also said based on her next U/S at 32weeks they might cancel the one that is scheduled for 36weeks (she said that even though the 2babys were classed as IUGR they werent that small they were just over 5lbs each and less than 16inches long) well if they werent that small why is she having to have all these extra scans and baring in mind the average newborn is now 7lbs girl and 8lbs boy... (if his growth is still showing normal) now my sister doesnt want this as her 2nd child Callum (one of the IUGR) babys stopped growing at 37weeks and had to be induced...so this new baby could be growing fine at 20-27-32weeks but his growth could still slow later on in the pregnancy right? so they should be keeping an eye on that?...i said she should complain and demand to see a different doctor after her next growth scan in March..we couldnt believe what we were hearing you are meant to leave an appointment feeling re-assured instead we just had more questions...dont you just hate it when its clear that someone hates their job and because your sister is creating extra work for her to do shes letting her have it when she has genuine concerns...my mums going with her next time i am sure my mum will let her have it if my sister has to see the same woman again....

My office doesn't worry until the fundal measurement is MORE than two weeks above or below the gestational age. Just like effacement and dilation, it's not an exact measurement and two different people can have two different measurements. I wouldn't worry about her current measurements, but, given her history, I would definitely make sure she speaks up about canceling the 36 week scan. They may be figuring that, even if this baby does stop growing at 37 weeks, it's still full term. I don't agree with it, but it may be their frame of mind. Unfortunately, she may have to work to advocate for her and the baby and fight for that last scan. Is there a reason she's no longer seeing the midwives? If she's not comfortable with this doctor now, she definitely doesn't want to have to deal with her during labor and delivery!

Thanks so much Lisa...yes she is under what is called shared care (so some appointments are at a clinic and her growth scans and antenatal appointments post scan are at the hospital)...she sees her midwife at our local health center and can go and make an appointment with them any monday she wants...she can just book herself in if shes worried or needs some reassurance...shes booked herself in this monday coming because at that appointment her BP was creeping up and she had a trace of protein in her urine (she cant stand still at all she feels lightheaded and dizzy which i attribute to her BP being high or sometimes low) she was induced with Lauren her first baby because of pre-eclampsia at 37weeks (she was 6lbs 10oz at birth) her BP was off the scales and she had to be taken to theatre incase they needed to get baby out real quick...(she managed to have her naturally...Lauren and this baby have the same father so shes scared of history repeating itself)i think shes gonna mention her worries to this midwife and then they can make an action plan from there....also they said another reason she could be measuring small is that baby is transvere and that can apparently affect fundal height if he were breech or headdown she would probably measure different...it really was the appointment from hell though...i really dont think cancelling the 36weeks scan is a good idea though....my mums really good at speaking her mind though but not in an aggressive manner so it will be interesting to see what happens next...

I'm glad she's getting in with her midwives. I'm sure it will do wonders for her peace of mind. Being transverse will DEFINITELY make her measure small--the uterus will be stretched out side to side instead of up and down. Hopefully the little one will turn so she can get some reassuring measurements. And it's good that she's keeping an eye on her BP. A high BP for long periods of time can affect the baby's growth too (on top of her history of pre-eclampsia). Good luck to her!! She's in the home stretch!

Baby number three for me was transverese and that did affect my fundal height measurement. I had to have growth scans with my last two babies although they are not always accurate they predicted that karina would weigh nearly nine pounds she was 5lb 14 and the day before Jack was born the u/s said he weighed 2lb 7oz he was born six hours after this at 3lb 11.
My last pregnancy my fundal height suggested a large baby i was measuring in the 99th percentile and my growth scans were right in the middle. My little man was born weighing 6lb 5 he was on the ninth percentile so all in all i think the growth scan was the closest. Rachelxxxxxxxxxxxx |

LOL oh definately the trouble maker...she has been told because of her bad symphasis pubis disfunction which causes excrutiating pain when she elevates her legs that she might not be able to have a natural birth...this baby is the only one the DRs have mentioned the possibility of a c-section about and hes baby number 5 the little mischief maker...lol...heartbeat was strong today and he is really low in the pelvis so low she couldnt really feel his head properly...lol...her next growth scan is next week when shes almost 36weeks so i cant wait to hear all about it...
