Still not talking!?WHY |

Riley is 19 month old now and she barely even talks...that's hardly! I am getting worried. She will say momma, bubba, mine, baby, and does baby babble. But when i try to get her to talk, like say "please" she will sign! When she wants "more" she will sign! I try to encourage her to speak but she just won't and so i am wondering if there is somehting wrong. I know she totally understand me because when i ask her to pick up her toys, she will, when i ask her to throw her diaper out, she will, or to get a drink or something, she will. But she just won't say a word...when you try to get her to say something she will do a little babling and then totaly shut down like she gets self-conscious or something. She does have 2 olders sisters who know what she wants, so yeah, that might not help. But my concern is there are kids at her daycare, her age, who are just babbling away and she will sit there and point or sign...........any advice???

If you need a comparison, Sonny is 18 mnths, and says Meme (for Mama) Da (for Dada), car, bus, cracker, clock and uh oh. He signs all other important things. I was told by a speech therapist only last week that this is completely normal. Riley is only a couple of words behind this. She told me they like to see 3 - 5 meaningful words by 18 mnths. You could talk to EI people if you feel it would put your mind at ease, but I wanted to pass on what I just found out in hope it helps.

An EI evaluation is totally free if it will put your mind at ease. But I think that she sounds totally normal for her age. What's the range of ages in her daycare class? Before probably 3 years old, there's such a HUGE range of normal when it comes to speech. And the fact that she's communicating with sign is a good indicator that she'll be picking up the words soon. She knows what she wants to say, she just can't verbalize it yet, so she's using the sign. If she didn't have signs, there would probably be a lot more whining around your house. LOL I would just reinforce the spoken word every time she used the sign. If she signs "more", be sure to say "you want more?" instead of just giving her more of whatever she's asking for. As long as you're reinforcing the connection between the sign and the word, she'll pick it up. It usually isn't until between 2 and 2 1/2 that they'll get the language explosion and seem to be picking up more words each day.

I don't hear any red flags either, but agree that assessments are free and never a waste of time. Signing is a good sign - Morgan never could sign, so it wasn't that he had a speech delay (though he did) but rather he had a communication delay. he also was hit or miss at understanding.

I think she sounds totally fine! I know easier said than done, but I wouldn't worry too much. See how she is at her 2 year check up. My first son was hardly speaking at age 2, or signing....we had him in speech after that. He didn't even speak sentences until he was 3.5! I think it's great that your DD is signing....that is definitely communication!

My second daughter was a lot like that too. I was worried about her speech because she only said a few words at 18 months and otherwise did sign language and babbled. At 2 years old, she could say about 50 words (although some were only words that I understood, but didn't sound like anything to someone else), and the doctor wasn't worried. Since then (she's 3) she's made a lot of progress, so I am not so worried anymore. I agree with the other folks - you may want to take her to a speech evaluation, just to make sure, but she is probably fine and when they are that age, there is a large range of "normal." Good luck!!

I'm with Polly. Emily is 18 months and JUST started saying words last week! That includes mama and dada. She had no words before that. She is very quiet at daycare. My first born was an early talker so #2 and #3 were hard for me. They both talked very late.

My DD#4 was a late talker, she had hardly any words when she turned 2, but by the time she was 2 1/2 she was talking in full sentences. She's 3 now and I can't stop her talking.

Nate is late on talking too. He is getting a EI evaluation sometime in the next couple of weeks. The doctors really aren't too worried, since he is fine on everything else and he has an older sister that talks a lot for him. The only things he says are Raaah! (If asked what a lion says) and SSSSS (what's a snake say). He will say Mamama if you ask him to say mama but he doesn't say it to me or anything, just what I ask him to say it, same with Dadda. He just started saying Izzie, again when you ask him. Is it worrisome that he only says things when you ask him to and not on "conversation"? And are animal noises even considered words?

All of my kids were late talkers. Pnut has been in speech since a year and something.. and she's fine now. I would get the eval. Early intervention is best if its needed.

DD1 only said 4 things at her 2nd bday. she couldn't even say "mooo" for a cow. (she would use a lot of signs....and understood everything we said though) she got EI at that point and was speaking in sentences within 6mos. I wonder if the speech therapy helped...or she finally just hit that language explosion that everyone talks about. I would definitely start the process of getting an EI eval....just to give you some peace of mind, if nothing else.

Collin is 20 months old and actually says a lot of words. He was hardly saying any at 16m, then started speech therapy at 17/18m and has been talking ever since. I would say he has about 20 words or so. the funny thing is he doesnt talk at all during speech therapy
