Okay, down to business.
I was a scheduled c-section for the 15th at 1:00 pm. We were told to get there 2 hours early. We got there at 11:07 am right before another mommy-to-be was being brought into L&D on a stretcher and it was obvious that she was not "due" yet. This of course reminded me of my last trip to L&D but there was just too much excitement for me to really dwell and get sad and think about my angels that went back to be with God. What I thought was, today I will meet my first earthly angel.
So I pre-registered and paid my monies in June so that if/when I need to go in to L&D I would not need to worry about all of that. Check-in was quick and painless. We were told to sit and our nurse would come get us. About 5 minutes later the nurse walked us back to the Recovery Area which is where they prep you to go to surgery and it is also where you come back to after surgery until they send you to your actual room.
They did all the necessary stuff, giving me a gown, giving hubby his scrubs, doing all the checks (BP and so on). Now, I told the nurse that I have rolling veins so be careful right, well she proceeds to try to set up and IV line and "explodes my valve/vein" (that was what I heard her term it as), basically what she did was stick me where she wasn't and I ended up with a huge blob on my hand. On to the next hand, I guess she better get it right since I only have two huh!!!!!! Did I forget to tell you how she was slapping me to find a vein and how she tied that elastic thing so tight, I wasn't sure blood was even circulating in my arm.
For the next arm, she asks the anesthesiologist to place the IV, I guess she got a little scared since I was getting a little attitude-y with her because she did the same slap and tie up stuff on this arm too. The anesthesiologist placed the IV and I hardly felt a thing. Plus he was quite the clown so I guess that kinda helped to appease me.
My Dr then came in and told my hubby that he would be assisting hubby to deliver the baby so time to get scrubbed up. We went back to the OR on time. I went in first because they had to place the spinal. Now this is the only part I can say that I was abso-posi-tutely scared of. Again, the clown anesthesiologist placed it and it really wasn't bad but my mind was just having a field day on me and I really was acting like a punk.
Anyway, with that done, they swung me around strapped me up, cleaned me up, inserted foley, got hubby in and started the procedure. Hubby and the clown anesthesiologist were talking and joking around during the surgery and Chrissie and my mom were able to watch through the observation window. Of course per Chrissie my mom was a complete basket case and was crying during the surgery while Chrissie was acting like a sportscaster telling her what was going on while my mom tried to hide.
Soon my Dr told my hubby he could stand and look over the curtain and he saw when the baby was being delivered. Now the only puzzling thing, the folks in the observation room can see the WHOLE enchilada but hubby had to sit behind the curtain and couldn't watch. They said something about keeping the table sterile, I guess I understand that.
Anyhoo, the baby was brought around the curtain for me to see then Daddy forgot about wife and clown anesthesiologist and went with his baby for cleaning and weighing. Can I tell you, this little baby has a set of lungs on him. I guess he was trying to tell the Drs they did the amnio for nothing. When he came out, he was mad about being disturbed because he was crying and in quite a fit. My mom and Chrissie were outside in the observation area and could hear him clearly.
The next time I saw hubby, he had the baby in his hands and was smiling ear to ear.
They took a long time to finish with me, hubby left with the baby while they finished up. My Dr said something about my small intestine being out of place so he corrected that.
When they were through, they took me back to Recovery for about an hour and then I was taken to the nursery where I got to see my baby through the glass (see picture that was in my post in the 3rd Trimester Forum).
Baby Dave had low blood sugar and was breathing fast when he was born so they kept him for testing and observation for a while but he was brought to my room about an hour and a half after I got to the room. He stayed with me in the room for the duration of the hospital stay.
I had a few breakdowns in the hospital though, first was when this evil nurse came in to take his blood for some screening tests, she had no bedside manner and she didn't take care in jamming that needle in my baby's heel. I cried more than the baby did. Then the next time was when they came to do the hearing test and they had him hooked up to all these things and I just couldn't handle seeing him with all that stuff on him. I knew there was nothing wrong with my baby but it just was hard to see that. Suffice it to say, I won't be taking him for his circumcision because I will probably end up having a heart attack.
We went to the Dr today and he got a clean bill of health. The Dr was surprised that he was so alert and was locking in on faces already at 5 days old. Yay Dave!!!!! The only thing is that they want him to gain an ounce a day so we'll have to work on that. It seems I wasn't feeding him enough but it's because my breast milk hadn't fully come in yet. I am working on that part though and supplementing with formula as we go.
All in all, this is the best thing I have ever done. I Thank God again and again for this gift and I thank you all on this board for being there for me through thick and thin.
I have been preggo 6 times now and I finally have my Earthly Angel, so sorry if this was long but this post has been a long time coming; if you made it this far, God Bless You.
