For me, pumping was easy. I set it all up before I left home - I had the bottles already on the horns for my 1st pumping session at work, after pumping I put lids on those and screwed the 2nd set of bottles on, etc. I always stayed one step ahead to save time. I never had a hard time getting milk out - I could pump for 10 min and get 6-8 oz, so I pumped 3 times a day and had enough for the next day and some to add to the freezer stash. Being a teacher, I didn't have a "pumping room" to go to at work, but my car was right outside my classroom - so I used the ameda PY with the car adapter and pumped in my car with a blanket thrown over me. Worked just fine for me!
Breastfeeding was easy once we made it through the first 3 months. I had overactive letdown and oversupply, so engorgement was always an issue, along with blocked ducts. The overactive letdown caused Anna to choke and gag at every feeding, plus she would get too full and vomit at every feeding. When I sat down to nurse her, I would always sit down with a towel to cover my clothes, because I knew she was going to cover me in vomit. I avoided going out anywhere, and when I did go out I kept a change of clothes for me and her in the diaper bag. Typically, I would sit down, cover myself with the towel, let her nurse for 1 min, pull her off and spray the milk into a second towel, and nurse for a minute, pull her off for a few minutes, etc - until she was full. Once she was about 4 months old my milk finally regulated and I could nurse her without her vomiting. At about 5 months old she was finally able to comfort nurse without getting too full and vomiting. Lovely story, isn't it? Nighttime was much easier after she was not vomiting constantly, because we learned to nurse lying down, which meant I didn't have to "fully" wake up to feed her. Even after she was a year old I had to wear nursing pads to nurse, because I would leak constantly. I feel "free" now - It's been 2 weeks since she has nursed, and I am finally able to go to sleep wearing just a gown without leaking all over everything. I can finally wear my regular bras now. I can say, if I had it to do again, I would just have bought a bunch of nursing tanks and not nursing bras. I wore the tanks to sleep in, and some days I wore those instead of bras. They were more comfortable. I can say, I loved "almost" every minute of nursing (minus those first 3 months of constant vomiting). |

I started by just trying to pump an extra ounce or so at a time. I am not a huge milk maker so it gave me a start to go back to work. I had all my stuff set up at work just like shelmo. It does make that part easy.
